A designer is concerned her friend just doesn't have what it takes to freelancer; Bryce discusses the concept of other freelancers as your community, not your competition.

--

Episode Summary

When a designer asks for advice for her friend, Bryce identifies an underlying issue: the designer is treating her friend like potential competition.

After offering some advice for that designer, Bryce discusses the idea of competition for freelancers and how finding a community was a big boon for his career. He then outlines how you can find your own freelancing community -- and why you should.

A state officially threatens her designer; a freelance engineer seeks help for dealing with his time-wasting clients.

Episode Summary

Check out the post that inspired this episode here

Bryce starts by telling a story about one of the most hellish clients he has come across recently, outline what, exactly, makes this particularly terrible client so terrible. He then explains how the submitter ended up in this situation and what to do about it.

Basically: value yourself and seek out clients who appreciate you and your work.

UPDATE: The original poster provided closure on this story.

Next, he addresses a question from a freelance engineer who has too many potential clients who are too interested in wasting his time.

The solution is simple: get your client to invest in you early on (e.g. a downpayment, an initial meeting fee that's refunded in their first formal invoice) to ensure they're serious. It will save you an immense amount of time and energy, and it's a great way to qualify clients.

Finding work as a freelancer is a topic we've covered before, but never has it been so simple and actionable.

Episode Summary

Check out the article that inspired this episode, follow the author (Justin Carroll) on Twitter, and check out his Behance profile while you're at it.

Bryce starts by explaining how the podcast has (and will) deal with sponsors. He then shares one of his personal stories about a client from hell before he dives into how to find new freelancing clients.

A basic breakdown of that last topic is as follows:

Step 1: Browse job boards every day.

  1. Authentic Jobs
  2. Behance Jobs
  3. Craigslist
  4. Drupal Jobs
  5. LeadPages Jobs
  6. Reddit /r/forhire
  7. Smashing Jobs
  8. Stack Overflow Jobs
  9. We Work Remotely
  10. WordPress Jobs
  • Sign up for several relevant job boards for your discipline
  • Filter listings to find projects, save your searches and have results automatically emailed to you
  • Bookmark at least 20 per week (about 5 per day)

Step 2: Research every lead

  • Carefully read the job listing description to identify their problem(s)
  • Thoroughly research the person to contact
  • Do your research to learn more about the company's story

Step 3: Use an email script

This email has one goal: get leads to reply with a simple yes. Here's the script Justin uses.

Hi Emma,

I was just reading your article about HSA accounts. I have an HSA but had no idea the limit increased this year. Thanks for the tip! I also noticed you're looking for a Web developer.

Honestly, I think I'm a perfect fit, here's why...

I've been developing systems for the past seven years ([link to portfolio or LinkedIn]), for exactly what you need, optimizing day-to-day operations. In fact, last year I helped one insurance company automate half their work week.

I'd love a chance to help you too.

Hiring me to help out would provide your company a seasoned developer who already understands the insurance industry, and who cares more about delivering real business results than simply filling a role.

Feel free to say no, but is that what you had in mind?

If so, give me a thumbs up, and I'll reply with a few ways I can help. Sound good?

Cheers!

Justin

  • Use an email script to contact job listings
  • Reword it using your own personality and don't be afraid to try new things
  • Follow up twice, a week apart (3 emails per listing)

With the launch of Is Freelancing For You, our free course, our editor-in-chief wanted to discuss the characteristics that lead to a successful freelancer.

Simply put, almost anyone can freelance -- but not everyone should. There are certain traits that position you for success, and there are common habits that will drag you down.

In no particular order:

  • Being curious enough to listen and learn for clients and your craft
  • Self-discipline and the ability to hold yourself accountable
  • Likewise, self-awareness is crucial when YOU are your business. There's no room for excuses or pointed fingers.
  • Professionalism -- to a point. You are your business, so don't be afraid to flex your personality. That said, don't be a dick.
  • Organizational skills. Two words: tax season.
  • Self-confidence. You're going to fail. A lot.
  • Patience. It's going to be a while before the fruits of your labour are ripe.
  • Flexibility is half the reason most clients work with freelancers.
  • Communication skills. This means clearly communicating yourself, your business, and your craft to clients.

The episode references an article by Ilise Benun, a former guest who discussed the importance of finding a niche during a Clients From Hell webinar.

Our editor-in-chief recently received an email asking for advice. The submitter had questions about:

  • A client who refused to stay in the scope of work
  • A client who overreached into the submitter's personal life
  • Difficulty refusing clients and/or their work

Sound familiar? At the heart of all these issues is a pretty noble quality: the submitter was being far too nice.

In this episode, Bryce recounts how "being too nice" still plagues his professional life, how he overcame it, and how you can too.
